MELAMINE: 12 Khong Guan buscuits ordered out of market
MUAR (Oct 20, 2008) : The Johor Health Department has directed the Khong Guan biscuit factory in Senai to recall 12 types of its biscuits from the market after finding Melamine levels in them higher than allowed.
Among the biscuits are the Soda Biscuits, Lemon Puff, Butter Cream, Baby Fish, Healthy Cracker, Cocoa Puff, Sandwich Oren, Family Crackers and Mini Puff biscuits.
Johor Women, Family, Welfare and Health Committee chairman, Dr Robia Kosai, said the biscuits had between 3.28mg and 22mg of Melamine per kilogram.
"Failure of the company to do so is violation of Section 13C of the Food Act 1983 and if found guilty there is a fine of RM100,000 or a prison sentence of 10 years or both," she told reporters today.
Dr Robia said the state's health department had seized 107 tonnes of the biscuits and raw material like flour, cream, ammonium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate worth RM561,000 from the factory on Oct 14.
According to Robia, the action was taken after investigation into the company's Marie biscuits which were exported to Vietnam and were detected to be contaminated with Melamine on Oct 8.
She advised the public to report to any district health office if they came across any of the products still on the market. -- BERNAMA
